Whether we'd meet in Calgary, Edmonton, Vancouver, Red Deer, wherever, his words, his philosophies, his ideas intrigued and fascinated me. And even when I went to Kamloops to coach junior hockey in 1984, I would meet with Clare every summer at coaching symposiums. But I did have one his former players, Brian Middleton, as one of my assistants in midget and I would grind on him for information about coach Drake's coaching philosophies and how he could build such a powerhouse year after year.Īfter finally meeting with Clare in 1982, I would get together with him after his games to listen to him break down what had just happened. ![]() I never had any interaction with him until the Program of Excellence Under-17 camp in 1982. I would sit in the stands by myself and take notes while Clare ran practice. I think it was around 1976, 1977, and I was using my lunch or dinner breaks to watch their afternoon practices at least three times a week. So I started sneaking into the Bears' practices. ![]() ![]() I was coaching midget hockey at the time and I was eager to learn whatever I could to make myself a better teacher. My place of employment was about three miles from where the Alberta Golden Bears held their hockey practices. It was the 1970s and I was working at the time for a sporting goods company in Edmonton called United Cycle. So much so, I needed to see this man in action for myself. It was the first time I'd ever heard of a person coaching in two sports at such a high level of excellence. I couldn't believe such a thing was possible. What makes somebody more successful than another? Why do certain individuals stand out in history as the world’s greatest thinkers? We still don’t have an answer, but we have found some clues.I first learned of Clare Drake while reading a story in the Edmonton Journal about a man who had led the University of Alberta to championships in both football and hockey.ĭrake pulled off those two Canadian Interuniversity Sport titles in 1967. ![]() “Even Freud went because it was so extraordinary … people who were freaks and oddities were drawn towards it because it was a place where they could be themselves.” The sequel will be set a decade or so after the first installment, during which time the Phantom has relocated from the Paris Opéra of Gaston Leroux’s original novel to Coney Island in Brooklyn, then still a hugely popular beach-side amusement resort for New Yorkers. His hopes are that a sequel to the movie based on his stage musical will in turn inspire stage productions based on a movie. The title he is working with is Phantom: Love Never Dies. And last but not least an unbearable tension Throughout the entire film, you're looking at it with your eyes wide open.Because no one asked for it, Andrew Lloyd Webber decided that his insanely successful Broadway production The Phantom of the Opera needed a sequel. Rupert Julian's classic silent has got everything! An actor capable of carrying the toughest role ever written, beautiful scenery, real-life drama, sentiment and romance. The climax of Phantom of the Opera is an extended series of chasings and battues, resulting in the dramatic (and gruesome) death of our protagonist. A breathtaking piece of early cinema that stands the test of time like no other. Immediately after this scene, the crew moves to the roof of the Opera building and Chaney takes place on top of the Apollo statue. ![]() The grimaces of Chaney seem to look right through the other partygoers and his search for Christine is relentless. The masked bal, which the Phantoms attends as the `Red Death' is an outstanding horror sequence and truly atmospheric. At least 3 sequences in the 1925 Phantom of the Opera are legendary and still astonishing after almost 80 years. His deformed appearance isn't explained and neither is shown how he falls for the beautiful, shy Christine. Here, Erik is said to be an escaped madman whereas he merely only was a hurt romanticist in later versions. The biggest difference between this first version and the later remakes lies in the roots of the Phantom. Her appreciation soon turns into fear when she finds out her benefactor is the horribly scarred Phantom of the Opera. The until then unknown singer is thankful and meets her `master' in the catacombs. He helps her career a little and threatens to kill the prominent singer Carlotta if she doesn't hand over the her role in Faust to Christine. After all these years of dwelling in the opera, he has fallen in love with the unsuccessful singer, Christine. Deep down the catacombs of the Parisian Opera building, the phantom reigns in forgotten dungeons and underground lakes. ![]() ![]() The film itself is depressing and dark, with terrific photography and settings. And justified! Even though this role was played by many respectable actors afterwards (like Claude Rains, Herbert Lom and Robert Englund) Lon Chaney is and remains the one and only Phantom of the Opera. Lon Chaney starred in over 150 films (most of them silent ones) but he'll always be remembered best for his personification of Erik, the Phantom. One of the most eminent horror films ever made and perhaps even the most famous silent horror movie from that time. ![]() Vegas Pro 19 Supported FormatsĪAC, AA3, AVI, BMP, MPEG-1, MPEG-2, MPEG-4, WMV, HEVCĪAC, AIFF, FLAC, LPEC, MP3, OGG, PCA, W64, WAV, WMAĪVC/AAC, AVCHD, AVI, HEVC, MOV, MPEG-1, MPEG-2, MPEG-4, MVC, RM, WMV, XAVC S we will also update the content based on official information. The camera, unfortunately, fails to take full advantage of the polygon playing field. Ship battles look better than air and land battles, as the multi-tiered water makes for neat submarine and torpedo effects. Planes tumble from the sky convincingly and ships sink realistically. After a while, the flat-faced characters develop their own charm, but it is an acquired taste. The polygons comprising the host of tanks, ships, planes, and people are somewhat blocky even at the best resolution and even worse when viewed close up. While Empire Earth may be an offshoot (if not spiritual successor) of Age of Empires, it doesn't have the meticulously clean and crisp graphics of that series. Still, commanders can shape their strategies around key weapon types using these advancements, giving even more depth and variation to the solid design. Players cannot rely on one unit type, as it is still a highly developed game of rock-scissors-paper, or, in this case, spear vs. Everything from swordsmen to cyberbots can be built faster, stronger, and cheaper, giving players unheard of customization opportunities for their society.Īdditional building improvements can be researched and individual unit types will specialize for a modest cost of gold, wood, iron, or stone. Civilization points earned after completing objectives can be used to buy specific improvements for buildings, peasants, or military units. Just as new ideas lead to improvements in weapons and technology, Empire Earth uses several new design ideas to improve on the state of RTS games. Such a large breadth of time and evolution means that only the epic battles and greatest conflicts are featured, however. The reliance on basic materials remains a constant, but production means improve as well peasants go from dragging items on the ground to using poles and finally incorporating wheelbarrows. The grand scale of the game is astonishing, and the progression from rock throwing to flame throwing is handled nicely. ![]() It takes a strong home front economy and an even stronger military force to create the greatest empire of all time. Lead designer Rick Goodman mostly sticks to the same formula he used in his smash hit Age of Empires. Historic personages are also introduced, including notables like Alexander the Great, Napoleon Bonaparte, and even Manfred von Richthofen, otherwise known as the Red Baron. Four single player campaigns, individual scenarios, and multiplayer skirmishes portray some of the greatest struggles throughout history such as the Trojan War and World War I. The title is ambitious in scope, rife with innovative ideas and, while not flawless, is a genuinely fun addition to the ever-growing lineup of RTS games.Įmpire Earth follows mankind through 14 epochs, from the Prehistoric Age to the futuristic Nano Age, each made distinctive by weapon and building designs. Since games about armaments tend to fare better than games about hardware, it is little wonder that Empire Earth charts the 500,000+ history of man by advancements in military might. I've created an overlay for my stream that will require me to have a specific location for each window, as a result my current way of creating two window captures for each game won't work as it will simply be far too much work to move them into the right place every time something changes. This has to be done at the beginning of EACH one of my streams and if either window gets closed, I have to reset both! What I do now is kind of cumbersome to begin with I have to start streaming, open one copy of Diablo 2, get it in place, then do a new Window capture and move it in place, then do it again with a 2nd copy. I've taken to streaming Diablo 2 and my viewers seem to like when I can stream two separate windowed mode sessions. Zoomer is an informal term used to refer to members of Generation Z, often in an ironic, humorous, or mocking tone. This emphasizes the shift from PC to mobile and text to video among the Neo-Digital population. Digital Natives primarily communicate by text or voice, while Neo-Digital Natives use video, video-telephony, and movies. In Japan, the cohort is described as Neo-Digital Natives, a step beyond the previous cohort described as Digital Natives. The Merriam-Webster and Oxford dictionaries both have official entries for Generation Z. The Pew Research Center surveyed the various names for this cohort on Google Trends in 2019 and found that in the U.S., the term Generation Z was overwhelmingly the most popular. The term Homeland refers to being the first generation to enter childhood after protective surveillance state measures, like the Department of Homeland Security, were put into effect following the September 11 attacks. In 2014, author Neil Howe coined the term Homeland Generation as a continuation of the Strauss–Howe generational theory with William Strauss. The name has also been asserted to have been created by demographer Cheryl Russell in 2009. Twenge later used the term for her 2017 book iGen. At that time, there were iPods and iMac computers but no iPhones or iPads. Psychology professor and author Jean Twenge used the term iGeneration (or iGen for short), originally intending to use it as the title of her 2006 book about Millennials, Generation Me, before being overruled by her publisher. The term Internet Generation is in reference to the fact that the generation is the first to have been born after the mass-adoption of the Internet. Other proposed names for the generation include iGeneration, Homeland Generation, Net Gen, Digital Natives, Neo-Digital Natives, Pluralist Generation, Internet Generation, Centennials, and Post-Millennials. The name Generation Z is a reference to the fact that it is the second generation after Generation X, continuing the alphabetical sequence from Generation Y (Millennials). While there is no scientific process for deciding when a name has stuck, the momentum is clearly behind Gen Z.
